An alcohol addiction centre in Lancashire has been praised by justice minister Jack Straw for the work it is doing.

Mr Straw praised the Substance Misuse Service for the impact it was having in reducing crime rates in the area.

The centre, run jointly by Lancashire Care Trust and the drug treatment charity Addaction, treats around 300 people a year for drug and alcohol addictions with services such as support in abstinence and relapse prevention, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.

The centre works closely with Lancashire Police in providing drug and alcohol screening and soon as [as soon as] suspects are arrested. Those who have problems can then immediately be offered help.

Mr Straw said this approach had helped reduce burglary in the Leyland area by 37 per cent.
