Rehab News: Alcohol abuse rockets in Ireland
A new report suggests that figures of alcohol abuse have soared in Ireland.
Figures published by the Health Research Board (HRB) show that the number of new cases treated for alcohol rose by 21 per cent between 2004 and 2006.
Dr Jean Long, Head of the Alcohol and Drug Research Unit of the HRB said: "New cases are an indirect indicator of recent trends in problematic alcohol use."
The preliminary figures could be a result of a combination of factors, including an increase in alcohol misuse, as well as an increase in the number of cases being reported, added Dr Long.
She also stressed that as the findings are in their "initial stages", they are actually an "underestimate of the true extent of treated alcohol use in Ireland".
The statistics referred to cases aged between 15 and 64, of which 16,020 were treated for problem alcohol use in Ireland between 2004 and 2006.
Dr Long also said the report highlights the link between alcohol abuse and illicit drug use and pointed out that "the fact that one in ten new cases is aged under 19 is further evidence of the risks of alcohol misuse among teenagers".
Last week Chancellor Alistair Darling used his inaugural Budget to raise taxes on alcohol to tackle binge drinking in the UK.
