Rehab News: 60,000 doctors to tackle alcohol abuse in the UK
The public health minister has announced that there will be an allocation of 60,000 doctors specifically trained to deal with alcohol abuse.
Dawn Primarolo said the government has allocated £650,000 to medical schools to ensure that students are trained in how to treat problems associated with the misuse of alcohol.
The money will be used initially to see how training can be added to the curriculum in every medical school within the next three years.
Tens of thousands of specialist doctors dedicated to treating the effects of alcohol abuse will be rolled out across the nation over the next ten years, said Ms Primarolo, who added: "Doctors and nurses are our eyes and ears when it comes to identifying problem drinkers."
She stressed that there is an urgent need to access around ten million people who are drinking potentially harmful levels of alcohol.
Under the new proposals, all doctors already working in the NHS will be offered new training using an e-learning package which will be available later this year.
The British Medical Association (BMA) published a report last month urging the government to implement effective "control policies" to confront the problem of the "epidemic" of alcohol misuse.
