What is a whisky rehab?

A whisky rehab is treatment aimed at helping someone overcome an alcohol dependence. This type of treatment would be suited to someone who primarily drinks whisky.

Drinking whisky may be more harmful than other alcoholic drinks, particularly if consumed neat. It can lead to quicker intoxication. More may also be drunk neat, which can result in alcohol poisoning. As with any type of alcohol, the long-term risks are the same. People may become psychologically and physically dependent, and alcoholism is associated with a number of emotional, financial and health problems.

A typical 70cl bottle of whisky will contain around 30 units; a litre bottle contains around 40. If you feel your whisky consumption is out of control, then you may need to access a whisky rehab. Moreover, if you or your loved one is a female drinking more than 70 units of whisky a week, or a male drinking more than 100 units of whisky a week, then you may need to access the medicated detox that a residential clinic can offer. This is in order to avoid the dangerous withdrawal symptoms associated with immediate alcohol cessation.

When should someone be admitted to a rehab centre for whiskey addiction?

There are a number of indicators that could suggest you or your loved one needs to access rehab. You may be drinking whisky regularly, and your drinking may be getting out of control. People around you may begin to notice and comment on your drinking, or the effects that your drinking is having on your behaviour, appearance and work performance, amongst others.  You may also need to go to a whisky rehab center if your health is becoming affected, or your relationships with loved ones have become strained.

An alcohol rehab center may be urgently required if a physical dependence is present. Trathen et al. (2008) highlight the symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal that point towards physical dependence. People who are physically dependent to alcohol may shake, sweat, feel nauseous and vomit when they stop drinking without any medicated support. This can progress into seizures and hallucinations and other symptoms of delirium tremens. These symptoms have the potential to be fatal, which is why a medicated detox is necessary in the majority of alcohol addictions.

How long can it take to rehab from whisky?

As with any alcohol dependence, whisky rehab centers will recommend a minimum of a four week programme. Some whisky rehab centers may offer shorter programmes, but it is vital that adequate psychological and therapeutic support is accessed alongside this. This will maximise you or your loved one's chances of successful rehabilitation.
