What is a Rum Detox?

A rum detox refers to the process involved in helping a person to become completely free from alcohol. A rum treatment program aims to minimise the danger present during a rum detox and alleviate the unpleasantness by carefully managing the withdrawal symptoms.

Sudden withdrawal from alcohol can be fatal. Therefore, it is important that medication appropriate for rum detox is available to make the process as safe as possible whilst in the clinic. The medication typically used at a rum clinic to detox someone would be Librium, Diazepam, or sometimes a combination of the two. In cases where liver damage is present, some rum treatment programs may use other combinations of other drugs.

If rum is the drink of choice it is important to consider the number of units in a bottle of rum. On average a 70cl bottle of most spirits would contain around 28 units of alcohol. For a male to be classed as physically dependent on alcohol they would be drinking 100 units or more a week. For a female to be classed as physically dependent on alcohol they would be drinking 70 units or more a week.

When considering the number of units in rum it is clear to see that the level of physical dependence will be reached much more quickly than when drinking other alcoholic beverages such as wine. Therefore, it may be necessary to consider accessing treatment at a rum clinic.

When should someone be admitted to an addiction centre to detox from rum

Anyone who is physically addicted to alcohol can benefit from admission to a rum addiction centre. Addiction occurs when the person experiences withdrawal symptoms when alcohol is not present. This can be physical symptoms such as sweating, shaking, and vomiting, or psychological symptoms such as intensely obsessing about a substance, depression or anxiety. A rum rehab supports the individual in dealing with all symptoms.

Once the person becomes completely free from substances, rum treatment programs will focus on the psychological side of the dependence. This will usually combine several types of therapy, including group therapy, one-to-one therapy, educational seminars, and personal reflection. It is important that the person learns to understand the addiction and the reasons behind it in order to avoid relapse once they have left rum rehab.

How long can it take to detox from rum?

The length of the detoxification program in a rum addiction centre will depend both on the severity of the dependence and the individual's health. An alcohol detox will usually take between 7 and 10 days.

For the best outcome of success, detox should be accessed as part of a full psychological treatment programme. This is supported by the National Treatment Outcome Research Study (NTORS) in 1996 that showed those who completed a minimum of 28 days in a treatment centre were four times more likely to maintain abstinence than others.
