What is a Residential Alcohol Programs?

A residential alcohol program refers to treatment within a residential facility which addresses the physical and psychological side of alcohol addiction.

Residential alcohol programs are inpatient services where the individual will stay in a specialist treatment facility to access help and support. This differs to other outpatient approaches as it allows the individual to be removed from their problematic surroundings to fully focus on their recovery. It offers a more intensive form of treatment within a highly structured environment.

Private residential alcohol programmes tend to share a number of key features and offer a structured programme of psychological, educational and social therapy alongside a detox where required. This is usually delivered through group therapy, one to one counselling, thought and feeling groups, anxiety and anger management classes, educational workshops, diary keeping and reflection groups and fellowship meetings. Rehab programs may also offer holistic therapies such as acupuncture, art therapy, reflexology, equine therapy and yoga to help with withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

When should someone be admitted to Residential Alcohol Programmes

For anyone with a dependence to alcohol, the first steps towards accessing the treatment offered in residential alcohol programmes can be challenging. It can be common for the person with the dependence to underestimate their drinking, and accuse people around them of 'blowing the problem out of proportion'.

One of the first questions to ask is, 'Is alcohol costing this person more than just money?'

There are a number warning signs that indicate someone needs help for their alcohol dependence. One key indication that someone requires treatment and possibly residential alcohol programmes are withdrawal symptoms when they cease their drinking suddenly. Symptoms to look out for include sweating, shaking, vomiting, nausea, cramps, trouble sleeping and agitation. In serious cases, if left untreated, withdrawal can produce alcohol related fits and seizures, hallucinations and confusion. These have the potential to be fatal.

Other indications and warnings signs which may suggest someone may require an alcohol detox program and treatment include noticing someone’s physical health and appearance deteriorating, noticeable changes to their normal behaviour and mood, and problems arising with their finances, employment and personal relationships as a result of their drinking.

Due to the risks of sudden alcohol withdrawal it is important never to stop drinking suddenly without the correct medication and support (Trathen et al., 2008). If you are concerned that you or a loved one has developed a physical dependency to alcohol and may require an alcohol detox program, then call one of our experienced advisors now.

Our trained advisors speak to people on a daily basis, and are highly experienced in recognising the warning signs that indicate someone needs the help and treatment offered within residential alcohol programmes.

How long is a residential alcohol program?

The duration of private residential alcohol programmes will vary depending on the particular situation.

We know that the longer someone commits to treatment, the less likely they are to relapse in the future. This is supported by research by The National Treatment Outcome Research Study (NTORS) in 1996 that showed a significant relationship between the length of residential rehab treatment and outcomes of success.

Private residential alcohol programmes in the UK are typically between 4 and 12 weeks long. Shorter private residential alcohol programmes for detox can also be accessed if required. In order to safely detox from alcohol, this typically takes between 7 and 10 days. Regardless of the length of treatment, an attitude of ‘seeing it through’ is central to effectiveness (Trathen et al., 2008). For the best outcome of success, private residential alcohol programmes should be followed by a regular, local to home aftercare, involving a combination of specialist counselling, attendance of NA/AA Anonymous meetings, and possibly the prescription of medication to aid continued abstinence (Trathen et al., 2008).

How much do Private Residential Alcohol Programs cost?

The cost of treatment can vary depending on the duration, the clinic and the amount of aftercare accessed.

Triage Healthcare recognises that there is a deficit in the provision of affordable private treatment for alcohol addiction in the UK. High quality free advice and information is provided to all, as well as best-value private treatment to individuals with a limited budget. Where to find Residential Alcohol Programmes help in the UK

Triage Healthcare works alongside a number of specialist treatment centres for immediate access to private residential alcohol programs, and regulates the standard of service provided on behalf its partners and ensures they are registered with the appropriate professional bodies.

When considering private treatment it is important to choose a clinic that is most likely to offer suitable treatment and cater for the needs of the individual. Addiction is different for each person and there is no “one-size-fits-all solution”. Rehab clinics can vary in their accommodation, treatment programme, activities and approach, and it is vital to choose the most appropriate private residential alcohol programme to meet the needs of all concerned.
